I had never been in any group but I thought it was important to do something for our Latino community. There are many issues we face and I saw the need to educate ourselves and inform others. I knew it wouldn’t be easy but I also knew that if we took the time we could make it happen. For me, the most frustrating thing is when someone comes with a need and you can’t help. Say they’re sick and they don’t know where to go, you can’t speak English fluently and you have no information. Now that we have the Comité, organizations come to us and we can share the information they give us. If you need a doctor and can’t afford to pay, we know there are people that can help. Maybe they were always there but we didn’t know – for us, and for the community, it’s new. That’s very important. It makes you feel like the doors are open.
